(Patria) - Dean of the Faculty of Political Sciences at the University of Sarajevo, Sead Turčalo, posed the question tonight at a formal forum in Sarajevo about long-term plans for Bosnia and Herzegovina, discussing the balance of independence and the challenges of the country's future development, writes Preporod.info.
The forum was held in the amphitheater of the Faculty of Islamic Sciences of the University of Sarajevo on the occasion of Bosnia and Herzegovina's Independence Day. The event was moderated by Umihana Šošić, and attended by students, representatives of the academic community, and the interested public.
Speaking about the position of Bosnia and Herzegovina in contemporary power relations, Turčalo stated that the country is in a multiply complex and contradictory position.
Turčalo believes that Bosnia, in today's power relations, is simultaneously in four places - on the one hand, it is a center, but not a center of decision-making.
- In Europe, we are a kind of convenient moral center, where Europe occasionally, in some significant round years, calls upon us for a kind of moral responsibility for everything it has not done - said Turčalo.
He notes that, among other things, this is why the Resolution on Srebrenica was adopted on a global level.
- On the other hand, we are on the margins, because we are not the epicenter of finance, trade, or the creation of international agendas, so we are more of a space of constant international attention, analysis, and reports, but without real influence - assesses Turčalo.
He reminds that Bosnia and Herzegovina was also a space for opposing Greater-state projects.
- We were an arena for two great national projects that failed, but they turned us into a buffer zone, in which institutions became spaces for airing conflicts and the inability to build - emphasized Turčalo.
From all of this, he adds, we have not learned the basic lesson - how important statehood and independence are.
Speaking about long-term perspectives, Turčalo emphasized that Bosnia and Herzegovina, even after more than three decades, has not answered fundamental strategic questions.
- We have not answered the question of who we are, and therefore we do not know where we are going. When we ask what kind of country we want in two or three years, we are talking about daily politics and names.
The key question must be: what kind of country, Bosnia and Herzegovina, do we want in a hundred years? Only such strategic thinking can build a country - Turčalo stated.
After the presentation, a discussion followed, during which, among other things, Turčalo pointed out the lack of new ideas in the content of political agendas, assessing that fundamentally new concepts are necessary for any progress and change in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
At the end of the forum, the Dean of the Faculty of Islamic Sciences at the University of Sarajevo, Mustafa Hasani, presented Turčalo with a certificate of appreciation for his participation.
