Trump's lawyers seek 2026 trial in federal election case

(Patria) - Donald Trump's lawyers have asked a federal judge in Washington to schedule the former president's trial for April 2026, on charges of attempting to overturn his election defeat to Democrat Joe Biden in 2020, Reuters reported.

That requested date would be the start of the trial after the US elections in November 2024, in which Trump is the main favorite for the Republican nomination.

"The public interest lies in justice and a fair trial, not in rushing to judgment," wrote
Trump's lawyers.

US Special Counsel Jack Smith, whose office is prosecuting the 2020 federal election case against Trump, asked US District Judge Tanya Chutkan last Thursday to schedule a trial beginning January 2, 2024.

That date is just two weeks before voting begins in the 2024 Republican
primaries.
