Abolition of External Matura Sought, Will the Minister Listen?

(Patria) - The Independent Union of Primary Education of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina - Sarajevo Canton Committee has sent an initiative to the Minister of Education of Sarajevo Canton Naida Hota-Muminović for the abolition of the external matura.

"It is known that for many years now, the external matura has been implemented in all primary schools in the Sarajevo Canton area. The introduction of the external matura brought about major changes for students, parents, and teachers. It was believed that the external matura would serve as a corrective measure for success. It was also thought and believed that the external matura would be introduced at the state level. Of the aforementioned, only the belief remains.

We are witnesses that nothing of the aforementioned has been achieved. The external matura was not introduced at the state level, but remained and took root only in the Sarajevo Canton. The justified question arises: why?", the Union's statement reads.

They clarify that they are not against learning, quite the opposite, but they believe that the external matura cannot be decisive for enrollment in secondary school.

"Do not additionally stress children with the external matura on top of their regular school obligations. We suggest you consider the so-called German system, in which children are directed or redirected to secondary schools that match their competencies. We invite you to take this initiative in good faith and to work together for the benefit of students," the Union of Primary Education states.

Saudin Sivro, the Union president, added a description to the announcement of this initiative in which he called out the minister's associates.

"Are Naida's experts more expert than UNESCO experts," Sivro wrote.
