The search for survivors is expected to continue on Saturday morning in the town of Santa Catarina Pinula in Guatemala after a catastrophic landslide that killed at least 30 people and left 600 missing, agencies report, according to the Patria News Agency.
Rescue operations led by more than 500 firefighters, soldiers, and police were interrupted on Friday evening "out of caution" to avoid endangering them due to darkness and possible rain, David de Leon, spokesperson for the National Center for Disaster Reduction, told reporters, according to AFP.
The search for survivors under the layers of earth that collapsed on the village continues on Saturday morning local time. The catastrophe occurred on Friday in the town of Santa Catarina Pinula, located about 15 kilometers southeast of the capital, Guatemala City.
"We have 29 identified bodies and one unidentified," said rescue operations commander Sergio Cabanas.
The number could increase in the coming hours due to the large number of missing persons, estimated at around 600.
