Cannon shot from Yellow Fortress in Sarajevo marked the beginning of the month of Ramadan

(Patria) - A cannon shot from the Yellow Fortress in Sarajevo marked the beginning of the holy month of Ramadan this evening.

The first tarawih prayer is tonight, and tomorrow is the first day of fasting.

Fasting during the month of Ramadan is among the fundamental pillars of Islam and represents a clear obligation for every adult, sane, and healthy Muslim man and woman who is at home.

Fasting lasts from dawn until sunset. During fasting, a believer is forbidden from consuming food and drink, smoking, as well as marital intimacy.

However, fasting is not limited to abstaining from bodily needs. It also involves guarding one's tongue, gaze, and thoughts – not to backbite, not to spread others' words, to guard against inappropriate glances and everything that diminishes the value of fasting.

The obligation of giving zakat al-fitr is also associated with Ramadan, which applies to every adult Muslim man and woman who has more food than needed for one day during Ramadan.

Zakat al-fitr is given by the head of the family, for himself and for his family members, in accordance with his financial capabilities.

According to the Islamic Community's Calendar, the Eid al-Fitr prayer will be performed on Friday, March 20, at 6:29 AM.
