Tight results: Josipović and Grabar-Kitarović head to runoff

According to preliminary unofficial results from the State Election Commission (DIP) as of 6 a.m., based on 99.98 percent of processed polling stations, incumbent president and presidential candidate Ivo Josipović won 38.46 percent, Kolinda Grabar Kitarović 37.22 percent, Ivan Vilibor Sinčić 16.42 percent, and Milan Kujundžić 6.30 percent of voters. Voter turnout was 47.13 percent, i.e., slightly more than 1 million and 787 thousand voters, reports the Bosnian news agency Patria.

Full official results of the first round of the presidential election should be announced during the day, after which deadlines for complaints begin, DIP officials announced.

The State Election Commission began publishing election results on Sunday at 8 p.m. Polling stations in the Republic of Croatia closed at 7 p.m. Turnout was slightly lower than five years ago. The Croatian president is elected under a majority electoral system, meaning the candidate who receives a majority of votes from all voters who cast ballots (50 percent plus one vote) will be elected president. The two candidates with the highest number of votes - Josipović and Grabar Kitarović - go to a runoff, which will be held 14 days later, i.e., on January 11, 2015.
