Theresa May announces resignation

British Prime Minister Theresa May has told her party colleagues that she will resign immediately after her proposal for the withdrawal of Great Britain from the EU is accepted, and before the next phase of that process, Patria reports.

Many consider her promise a desperate move by which May seeks to gain support from Tories for her plan, which has been rejected twice so far.

The Prime Minister's move comes as parliamentarians cast their 'indicative votes' on eight alternative options for Great Britain's exit from the EU, including a withdrawal agreement, a referendum, a customs union, and a Norway-style agreement, none of which have secured a majority.

'I am clear about the mood of parliament. I know there is a desire for a new approach and new leadership in the second phase of Brexit negotiations, and I do not want to stand in the way of that,' May stated, adding, 'I know some are concerned that if they vote for the withdrawal agreement, I would take it as a mandate and rush into the second phase without the debate we need to have. I will not do that, I hear what you are telling me. But we must finalise the agreement and deliver Brexit,' the Prime Minister emphasised.

She also said she is ready to leave her post earlier in order to do 'what is right for the country and the party'.

However, if the withdrawal agreement is accepted, which would mean Britain's exit from the EU within two months, May could leave her post before the summer.

Just as she predicted, the Prime Minister's move has sparked a new debate within Tory circles, this time about her replacement, which will likely lead to a vote of support for her plan so that she can leave her post as soon as possible.

However, although well-conceived, albeit with a sacrifice on the Prime Minister's part, it is still not certain that she will receive full support, which includes the Democratic Unionist Party, as well as almost all Conservative Eurosceptics, unless more Labour members give their vote of support or remain abstained.

In her address, the Prime Minister acknowledged that she felt the pressure being exerted on her to leave her post. 'I don't go to bars and salons to gossip with colleagues, but that doesn't mean I haven't heard the message,' May said.

As expected, names of possible candidates for the post of Prime Minister are already emerging. Former Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson has already indicated that he will support the Prime Minister's plan if she resigns afterwards. Alongside his name, Dominic Raab, former Brexit Secretary, Jeremy Hunt, Foreign Secretary who succeeded Johnson as a 'classic conservative candidate', and several others are being mentioned.
