Global experts advocate for UN reform: Has this institution lost its relevance?

SARAJEVO, (Patria) - An increasing number of international analysts are advocating for UN reform, believing that the UN has lost its purpose.

Leading global experts in the field of international law believe that the UN has very little influence when it comes to stopping armed conflicts around the world, and that it showed its true impotence in the civil war in Syria, which has been ongoing for seven years.

Last week, the UN Security Council declared a 30-day ceasefire in Syria, but the truce was not respected even for a day. The fighting continued in Eastern Ghouta, a suburb of Damascus, and according to information from Syria, over 500 people, mostly civilians, lost their lives in just a few days.

- Eastern Ghouta can no longer wait, this hell on Earth must be stopped - said UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in a speech before the UN Human Rights Council.

Information from the ground indicates that the Syrian army also used chemical weapons against civilians. Such actions are condemned by all world politicians and media, but they all helplessly watch the killing of civilians.

It is enough for just one of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council to disagree with a proposed resolution and cast a veto, and the resolution will not pass.

Let us recall the proposal of the British resolution on the genocide in Srebrenica in 2015, which was vetoed by the then Russian ambassador to the UN, Vitaly Churkin. The same situation exists today with Syria and Yemen, where Russia vetoes all proposed resolutions.

On the other hand, we have the United States, which for years has not allowed the adoption of any resolution in favor of Palestine.

It is precisely the right of veto that experts in international law consider one of the biggest flaws of the UN, because countries with veto power in this way care exclusively about their own interests, not human lives.
