World Down Syndrome Day: Encourage people to respect their rights more

(Patria) - Today marks World Down Syndrome Day. The aim of the observance is to inform the world about this disorder and thereby encourage people to respect the rights of people with Down syndrome.

By increasing understanding and improving their position in society, we can improve the quality of life for people with Down syndrome.

Down Syndrome Day was first observed in Singapore in 2006, and has been celebrated worldwide ever since.

Down syndrome is a genetic disorder caused by the presence of an extra chromosome. It occurs at the moment of conception.

Syndrome is a term for a set of common signs and characteristics, and the name Down comes from the English doctor John Langdon Down, who first described the syndrome in 1866, almost 100 years before the cause of the disorder was found. People with Down syndrome have a certain degree of developmental disorder (intellectual disability).

The degree of disorder varies from person to person, and it is impossible to determine the degree of disorder a child will have immediately after birth.

On average, one in 650 children is born with Down syndrome. This disorder prevents the normal physical and mental development of the child. Down syndrome is considered one of the most common genetic abnormalities.

The symbol of today is colorful socks because people with Down syndrome cannot pair them. Wearing colorful socks shows support for the fight of people with Down syndrome to integrate better into our society.
