World Marks Earth Day

(Patria) - International Earth Day will be marked today around the world with various events aimed at drawing citizens' attention to the importance of nature conservation and preventing negative environmental consequences.

The aim of marking this date is to warn about the dangers threatening life on Earth, ecosystems, and urban areas, due to industrial development, increased energy consumption, global warming, and climate change.

This significant date is celebrated to make the world population aware of its responsibility towards the planet it lives on and thus reduce the negative impact on the environment.

Earth Day was established in 1970 in the USA, after an environmental action, and has been celebrated worldwide since 1992, when the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development in Rio de Janeiro established the long-term Program for the Promotion of Sustainable Development, reports Tanjug.

Numerous actions and events are organized worldwide today with the aim of raising the level of environmental awareness, educating, and motivating citizens to actively engage in the fight for the preservation of planet Earth. Experts warn that, in addition to industrial and technological development, humans, through their actions, have led to dramatic environmental pollution.

Biologists warn that a large number of plant and animal species worldwide are on the verge of extinction, which seriously disrupts the entire ecosystem and biodiversity. Biologists cite the destruction of habitats by human activity, uncontrolled exploitation of all Earth's resources and its flora and fauna, as well as environmental pollution, as key causes of species extinction.
