Everyone to Bjelašnica on February 10: All-day program marking the 34th anniversary of the Sarajevo Winter Olympics

SARAJEVO, (Patria) - On this day 34 years ago, the 14th Winter Olympic Games were opened in 1984 in Sarajevo (ZOI '84), the largest and most interesting sporting event held in the territory of the former Yugoslavia. In addition to the sports venues, the famous Sarajevo spirit of hospitality was at the forefront, and the entire city lived in an unforgettable atmosphere.

In order to preserve the memory of the sports story that changed and marked the history of Sarajevo, the Tourist Board of Sarajevo Canton, in cooperation with ZOI '84, will organize an all-day program on Saturday, February 10, 2018, starting at 10:00 AM on the Olympic mountain Bjelašnica.
 
The program begins with the 13th International Managers' Skiing Competition – ETI CUP 2018, followed by a performance by the famous Sarajevo band Bombaj štampa. On Saturday evening, night skiing will be opened on Bjelašnica on a slope that will be decorated in Olympic colors.

Thirty-four years ago, Sarajevo was one of a total of 12 cities to host the Winter Olympic Games. Participants competed in the disciplines of alpine skiing (Jahorina and Bjelašnica), bobsleigh and luge (Trebević), biathlon, Nordic skiing and ski jumping (Igman), as well as hockey and figure skating in the Skenderija and Zetra sports halls in Sarajevo.
 
The program of the Games included 39 events in which 1,272 athletes from 49 countries participated (274 female competitors and 998 male competitors). Sarajevo was once again a meeting place of East and West, as representatives from both Eastern and Western bloc countries came to the Sarajevo Olympics. ZOI '84 was followed by over 7,500 media representatives from 41 countries, and it is estimated that more than 2.5 billion viewers watched the event via television.
 
The Games, both in terms of the number of participants and the success of the organization, surpassed all previous ones, and were closed on February 19, 1984, with the words of the then President of the International Olympic Committee, Juan Antonio Samaranch: "Goodbye, dear Sarajevo!"
