Ceremonial Receptions in Schools: Nearly 4,000 First-Graders Enrolled in Sarajevo Canton

Classes began today in all primary and secondary schools in Sarajevo Canton, with nearly 4,000 first-graders sitting at school desks for the first time. The highest number were enrolled in primary schools in the Novi Grad municipality, reports Patria news agency.

Schools and teaching staff prepared a special program for the first-graders, and a festive atmosphere prevailed at the "Aleksa Šantić" Primary School, which has enrolled the most students in the first grade for several years. This year, they have five classes with 150 students.

Around 36,000 students were enrolled in primary schools, and around 16,000 in secondary schools.

As previously announced by the Ministry of Education, Science, and Youth of Sarajevo Canton, new subjects have been introduced in the first grade of the nine-year primary education – English language and Informatics. These subjects are intended to be taught through play, and a third hour of Physical Education has also been introduced.

Informatics and Physical Education classes will be taught by primary school teachers, while English will be taught by English language professors.

In the first semester of the new school year, classes will last until December 31st of this year, when the four-week winter break begins for all students.
