Everything students produce can be bought at the school shop "German Corner"

Talking about the future of agriculture in Bosnia and Herzegovina means talking about new generations who will direct their education towards this branch of the economy. One of the schools in the Canton of Sarajevo that educates and trains them in this direction is the Secondary School for Agriculture, Food, Veterinary and Service Activities in Sarajevo, writes the BH news agency Patria.

The teaching process in this school is focused on theoretical and practical classes in several different fields. Whichever field the children choose, agricultural, food, veterinary technician, or three-year education for butcher, baker, fruit grower, milk processor, great attention is paid to practical training.  

This school has established cooperation with numerous institutions where students can observe work processes and gain experience: the Faculty of Agriculture and Food Sciences Sarajevo, the Federal Institute for Agriculture, the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, and several Bosnian companies. In addition to this cooperation, the school also has its own farm in Ahatovići where they grow several types of vegetables and fruits. Potatoes, spinach, and apples are grown the most.

In the school premises, about ten years ago, with the help of German donations, a small dairy, bakery, butcher shop, and mushroom farm were built. Students of this school have launched a milk processing program and produce several types of cheese.

Everything they grow is used in the school bakery, and the products can be bought at the school shop "German Corner" at very affordable prices. It is important to emphasize that all products are inspected before they reach the market. Inspections are also carried out in the school laboratory as a practical part of the food technician program and at the Agricultural Institute in Butmir.

Students of this school are regular exhibitors at domestic production fairs, thus presenting what they produce to the wider public.

An interesting fact is that the school has entered a project for the production of new crops and the improvement of existing production. This involves arugula, a plant that is relatively unknown but highly valued in world cuisines and served as a salad. Although it is slightly more expensive compared to lettuce, its nutritional value justifies the price.

Many students find employment after completing their education, and some have even started their own production, writes Patria.
