Commemoration and Burial of Prof. Dr. Munib Maglajlić Tomorrow

On Monday, 19 October 2015, Prof. Dr. Munib Maglajlić, a long-time full professor at the Department of Literatures of the Peoples of Bosnia and Herzegovina of the Faculty of Philosophy, University of Sarajevo, and long-standing president of the Bosniak Cultural Community "Preporod", passed away suddenly at the age of 71, reports the Patria news agency.

The commemoration for Prof. Dr. Munib Maglajlić will be held jointly organised by the Faculty of Philosophy, University of Sarajevo, and the Bosniak Cultural Community "Preporod" on Wednesday, 21 October 2015, starting at 11:00 AM at the Faculty of Philosophy, University of Sarajevo (Franje Račkog 1 Street). The funeral prayer (dženaza) will be performed in the courtyard of the Bey's Mosque (Begova džamija) in Sarajevo after the afternoon prayer (ikindija-namaz), at 3:45 PM, followed by burial at the Ravne Bakije cemetery (transport to the cemetery provided from Latin Bridge at 4:00 PM).

Prof. Dr. Munib Maglajlić was born in Banja Luka in 1945. He graduated in Mother Tongue, Literature and History in 1966 at the Higher Pedagogical School in Banja Luka. He also studied and graduated in 1970 from the study group History of Yugoslav Literatures and Serbo-Croatian Language at the Faculty of Philosophy, University of Sarajevo.

At the Faculty of Philosophy, University of Zagreb, he defended his master's thesis in 1974, titled Sevdalinka (Literary-Historical and Literary-Theoretical Determination of a Short Oral Form from the Bosnian-Herzegovinian Area), and in 1980 his doctoral dissertation Literary-Historical and Literary-Theoretical Determination of the Muslim Folk Ballad.

The narrower field of expertise of Prof. Dr. Munib Maglajlić was oral literature and its connections with written literature, as well as older Bosniak literature, on which he published dozens of individual studies, discussions, reviews and critiques, as well as five authored books, with two books in preparation: From Reality to Song: Essays on Oral Poetry (1983), Muslim Oral Ballad (1985), Oral Poetry from Creators to Collectors (1989), Lyric Song, Ballad and Romance in Bosnia and Herzegovina (1992) and Oral Ballad of the Bosniaks (1995).

He also published 16 edited books, was the editor of a whole series of publications on Bosniak and Bosnian-Herzegovinian literature and culture, and presented at numerous scientific meetings, conferences and congresses at home and abroad. Among other things, for many years he was a member of the editorial board of the Yearbook, the scientific journal of the Institute for Literature in Sarajevo, editor of the Works of the Faculty of Philosophy, University of Sarajevo, contributor to the second edition of the Encyclopedia of Yugoslavia, editor for Bosnia and Herzegovina of the bibliographic edition Jahresbibliographie, published in Freiburg and Ljubljana, as well as a member of the editorial board of the edition Bosniak Literature in 100 Books of the Bosniak Cultural Community "Preporod".

Prof. Dr. Munib Maglajlić was president of the Bosniak Cultural Community "Preporod" from 1994 to 2001. From the end of his studies until 1992, he worked at the Institute for Literature in Sarajevo, where he was elected to all scientific research titles, from professional associate to scientific advisor, and where he also served as director.

He was employed at the Faculty of Philosophy, University of Sarajevo from 1992 as a full professor in the field of Oral Literature, from where he retired in 2012. Death found him in the position of director of the Institute for Bosniak Studies at the Bosniak Cultural Community "Preporod" and as editor at the "Mulla Sadra" Foundation.
