Sulejmanović: Our country's priority must be retention, not emigration of educated staff

On the occasion of February 11 – International Day of Women and Girls in Science, the Social Democratic Party of Bosnia and Herzegovina organized a Round Table, attended by numerous female and male guests, as well as members of SDP BiH.

Edita Sulejmanović, coordinator and opening speaker of the Round Table, emphasized that this is one of a series of activities that SDP BiH will undertake to more actively engage female scientists and those on their way to becoming scientists, to more actively participate in the progressive struggle for Bosnia and Herzegovina, whose priority will be the retention, not the emigration of educated staff.

- The Round Table is also an occasion to open a constructive discussion and remind of the importance of developing and improving scientific research and science in general, as well as the participation and position of women in science. We, women, approach life, work, children, and education in a very specific way. Our society has never needed this female approach more in certain issues, which in many cases are far more than "women's issues".

On the other hand, in our progressive struggle for the role we fully deserve in public and socially responsible life in Bosnia and Herzegovina, we need the support of our comrades and colleagues, students, and professors, because together we can achieve much more – Sulejmanović stated.

The Round Table also discussed the proposed Draft Law on Higher Education, which SDP BiH has warned about several times in the past regarding the fundamental contradiction of key provisions and its destructiveness to the academic community.

- Higher education in Sarajevo Canton has been brought to the brink by the shameful proposal of the Draft Law, which is ignorant of science and its importance for the development of society. The understanding of the importance of scientific research and the allocation of funds for scientific activity and infrastructure must be much more significant than it is now, and the autonomy of academic staff elected to a certain teaching position must be unquestionable – Sulejmanović added.
