Scabies ravages 'Lipa' camp, every second migrant infected

SARAJEVO, (Patria) - Doctors and medical staff of health centres in Una-Sana Canton (USK) provide daily health care to about 900 migrants and refugees at the Lipa site near Bihać.

The biggest problem is the scabies infection, which is expected given the difficult accommodation and living conditions in the previous period, Bljesak.info reports.

That is currently our most serious problem, because almost every other person currently staying here is infected with scabies. Our on-duty medical teams have taken this problem very seriously, and the Institute of Public Health has helped in developing protocols for treatment, i.e., suppression and prevention of further spread of the infection. Individual treatment per tent is precisely defined – said the Minister of Health of USK, Nermina Ćemalović.

The importance of providing heated accommodation spaces, hygiene supplies, as well as spaces for maintaining personal hygiene was also highlighted, BHRT reports.

Conditions have significantly improved and these people have finally been provided with dignified treatment. I am especially glad that clear rules of conduct and procedures in the tent settlement have been introduced. Also, donors are appearing who help in the procurement of food, footwear, clothing and other necessities – said the spokesperson of the Red Cross of the City of Bihać.

The migrants and refugees themselves are much more satisfied with the current situation.

We are aware that it cannot be ideal, but now the situation is much better. We sleep in a heated space, we have enough food and water, as well as the possibility of maintaining personal hygiene and toilets. Everyone is quite satisfied – said Ali from Pakistan.
