Court of BiH: Over 70 prison sentences commuted to fines since last year

(Patria) - The Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina has issued over 70 decisions to commute prison sentences to fines from 2024 to mid-2025, with a total of 201,000 KM collected, the Court of BiH stated.

During 2024, the Court of BiH commuted prison sentences to fines in 49 cases, while in the first half of 2025, a total of 22 commutation decisions were made.

The most frequently commuted sentences in Bosnia and Herzegovina relate to various criminal offenses including abuse of official position, unauthorized recording and transmission of content, association for the commission of criminal offenses, receiving gifts and other benefits, smuggling, incitement to prostitution, unauthorized trafficking of narcotic drugs, failure to report criminal offenses, and aiding perpetrators of criminal offenses.

These offenses cover a wide range of criminal activities, from corruption and abuse of power, to protecting citizens' privacy and security, to combating drug trafficking and other dangerous acts.

Appropriate prison sentences are prescribed for them, in accordance with the severity and consequences of the offenses.

Commutation of prison sentences to fines does not apply to criminal offenses against the integrity of Bosnia and Herzegovina, terrorism, financing of terrorist activities, public incitement to terrorist activities, recruitment for terrorist activities, training for carrying out terrorist activities, and organizing a terrorist group.

The judge/panel that rendered the first-instance verdict is competent to decide on the convicted person's request to commute a prison sentence to a fine, according to the Court of BiH.
