Subašić from Potočari: Srebrenica is repeating in Palestine and Ukraine, and the world is silent again

(Patria) - At the commemoration of the 30th anniversary of the genocide in Srebrenica, Munira Subašić, a surviving mother and president of the association "Mothers of the Enclaves of Srebrenica and Žepa", addressed the attendees. In a poignant and direct speech, she reminded them of the pain that the mothers of Srebrenica have carried for three decades, but also of the injustice that, as she says, continues to this day.

"I am Munira Subašić, a genocide survivor. I am addressing you on behalf of thousands of mothers whose children were killed. To those who did not vote for the genocide resolution, I say – you live in darkness. We will not forgive you," Subašić said.

She emphasized that the past three decades have been marked by denial, glorification of criminals, and the silence of the international community:

"For thirty years, we have witnessed hatred and the glorification of war criminals. Our children were killed simply because they were Muslims, and the world and Europe applauded, helped."

She added that many came with the aim of reducing the Bosniak population in these areas, but that the mothers knew they had to bear witness to the truth.

"After the genocide, there were 5,500 orphans. Some children were born after their fathers' deaths. They don't even have a picture to see what their father looked like. They ask us if they resemble him. They killed their fathers and their memories."

She particularly emphasized the responsibility of the United Nations:

"Our children were killed under the UN flag, in front of the world's eyes. And everyone should be ashamed."

Munira Subašić expressed pride in the mothers who raised their children without hatred:

"Our children today are doctors, engineers, they speak multiple languages. When I meet one of them and hear 'I am from Bosnia, from the Balkans,' I am proud as a mother. We succeeded. If my son were alive, he would be successful, he would have a family. They killed our grandchildren along with our sons."

At the end of her speech, she issued an appeal:

"As I stand here, many mothers in Ukraine and Palestine are going through the same thing we went through in 1995. The world has learned nothing. They tell us stories, and when we ask them why they don't accept us into the EU and NATO, they are silent. We belong there, not in darkness. No one can bring back our children, but we can have a future."

She also warned about the rise of fascism in contemporary Europe:

"Europe, wake up. Instead of justice, fascism is awakening. How long will it be like this – I don't know."
