Stoltenberg: We Must Do More in the Western Balkans

MUNICH, (Patria) - The three-day security conference focusing on global issues, threats to peace and security has begun in Munich. On the first day of the conference, among other present leaders and ministers, the heads of NATO and the UN, as well as the defense ministers of Germany and France, addressed the attendees.

In discussions about threats coming from North Korea and terrorism, the future of Europe and the Euro-Atlantic partnership was also mentioned. Jens Stoltenberg, NATO Secretary General, said that NATO and the EU have a long history and great responsibility in the Western Balkans.

- Perhaps we are too focused on Syria and other problems, and in the Western Balkans there are also some trends that are not satisfactory. We must do much more in the Western Balkans. We especially need to work with current members and those who want to become our members. But we must not forget countries like Serbia, with which we have a strong partnership that can be further strengthened - Stoltenberg said.

- I think we must be clear that global problems can only be solved globally. Multilateralism is needed today more than ever, and we need unity if we want to fight against polarization. I say this because threats to peace and security today are such that it is better to unite than to be as divided as we are today. Some think we are naive because we believe we can unite, but I think we are even more naive if we think we can defeat threats while divided - said UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres.

The Munich conference is attended by more than 30 heads of state and government, including Prime Minister Denis Zvizdić.
