State Department on new blacklist: Continued support for BiH citizens

(Patria) - State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller issued a statement today regarding the imposition of US sanctions on officials from Bosnia and Herzegovina for undermining the Dayton Peace Agreement.

Miller reminds that the United States today sanctioned four officials from Bosnia and Herzegovina who participated in the adoption of the law in the National Assembly of Republika Srpska, which undermines the Constitution of BiH, and at the same time Annex of the Dayton Peace Agreement.

"Proposed by Milorad Dodik, who is under US sanctions, and the president of Republika Srpska, an entity in BiH, this new regulation represents a brazen attempt to undermine state institutions.

The law jeopardizes the stability, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of BiH, as well as the prospects for the country's integration into Euro-Atlantic and European institutions, to the detriment of the citizens of BiH.

High Representative Schmidt - the supreme authority for interpreting the Dayton Peace Agreement - publicly condemned the law as an unacceptable violation of the rule of law and an attack on the constitutional order of BiH.

Despite the High Representative's efforts to annul the law, Dodik signed the Decree on the entry into force of the law on July 7, 2023.

Today's announcement of sanctions is a continuation of previous sanctions and visa bans imposed by us to promote accountability, peace, stability, and functional democratic governance in the Western Balkans region.

We will continue to provide support to the citizens of BiH in their efforts to strengthen the rule of law and maintain peace and prosperity," Miller said.

Let us remind you that the US Department of the Treasury added the Speaker of the National Assembly of Republika Srpska, Nenad Stevandić, the Prime Minister of Republika Srpska, Radovan Višković, the member of the Presidency of BiH, Željka Cvijanović, and the Minister of Justice of Republika Srpska, Miloš Bukejlović, to the list of sanctioned persons, in accordance with Executive Order 14033, for being responsible for or complicit in, or for having directly or indirectly engaged in, violations or circumvention of any regional security, peace, cooperation, or mutual recognition agreement or framework or accountability mechanism relating to the Western Balkans, including the Dayton Peace Agreement.
