Stano: EU expects the National Assembly of Republika Srpska to abandon the adoption of the entity election law

(Patria) - The National Assembly of RS is discussing the adoption of legislative initiatives that would undermine the constitutional order of the country, the functionality of its institutions and fundamental freedoms, and would oppose Bosnia and Herzegovina's obligations on its path to the EU, stated European Union spokesperson Peter Stano.

"We expect the entity leadership to cease these legislative initiatives, including in particular the RS draft law on elections, referendums, immunity, and 'foreign agents'. The EU emphasizes that the sovereignty, territorial integrity, constitutional order, including the decisions of the Constitutional Court, and international personality of Bosnia and Herzegovina must be respected. Any action against these principles will lead to serious consequences, as the European Union has already clearly stated", the statement reads.

He adds: "Following the European Council's decision last month to open accession negotiations with the EU, the EU expects Bosnia and Herzegovina, including the entity of Republika Srpska, to take steps forward instead of taking measures that contradict its European path".

"The European Council's decision showed that dialogue instead of escalation brings results. We call on all leaders in Bosnia and Herzegovina to fulfill their obligations and the expectations of citizens, and to return to the negotiating table for the benefit of the country's people and its future in the EU", Stano concludes in the statement.
