(Patria) - Hundreds of thousands of foreign citizens are stranded in Middle Eastern countries. Flights have been suspended or airport access is difficult due to airstrikes. Countries are trying to get their citizens out.
Australia
Foreign Minister Penny Wong said Australia is talking to airlines to help 115,000 Australians stuck in the Middle East, but stressed that evacuations will be difficult while much of the region's airspace is closed.
France
A French official said about 400,000 French citizens are affected by the situation. After calling on travelers to register in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' "Ariane" system, more than 25,000 people have registered.
Germany
The German government stated that the tourism sector is responsible for the return of most of the approximately 30,000 Germans stranded in the region, while military evacuation is a last resort.
Italy
The first charter flight with 127 Italian citizens stranded in Oman or transferred there from Dubai landed at Rome's Fiumicino airport late on Monday. Passengers thanked the Italian embassy for their help in returning.
Spain
Spain has begun evacuating its citizens from the Middle East, Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares said on Tuesday.
United States
The US State Department on Monday urged Americans to leave more than ten countries in the Middle East immediately, but has not yet announced organized repatriation flights. At least two embassies have been closed, in Riyadh and Israel, while the Consulate in Dubai was also shelled.
Regarding Bosnia and Herzegovina, today's flight from Dubai has been cancelled. There were supposed to be 156 BiH citizens on the flight.
One plane with 200 passengers landed in Serbia yesterday, and new flights are also expected. Serbia has offered assistance in extracting BiH citizens from the UAE.
