Nearly 70 people were trapped on Saturday under the rubble of a hotel in the Chinese city of Quanzhou that served as a quarantine for coronavirus patients, city authorities announced. Video footage online shows rescue services removing rubble in search of survivors.
The building collapsed around 7:30 PM local time, and 34 people were rescued within two hours of the accident, authorities in the city in Fujian province announced.
Chinese state media report that the hotel opened in June 2018, had 80 rooms, and served as a quarantine for those infected with the coronavirus.
According to official data, there were 296 cases of infection in that province on Friday, and more than 10,000 people were placed under observation.
It is still unknown how the hotel collapsed.
China's Xinhua news agency reported that a work safety committee has been dispatched to the scene to investigate the situation.
