Destroyed in 1992: First Tarawih in Sinan-beg Mosque in Čajniče after 32 Years

(Patria) - The first Tarawih prayer this year, as the central program for the Goražde Muftiship, will be performed on Sunday, March 10, in the Sinan-beg Mosque in Čajniče, which will also be the first collective prayer in this mosque after 32 years.

The Sinan-beg Mosque was destroyed during the aggression against Bosnia and Herzegovina by the then official structures and military authorities, as part of a broader plan to destroy the material and spiritual culture of Islam and to persecute Muslims.

"Ramadan is the right time, and the restoration of the Sinan-beg Mosque is a good opportunity for our own elevation with it," the Goražde Muftiship stated on this occasion.

Throughout history, it shared the fate of other mosques in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and was last completely destroyed on June 8, 1992. Its reconstruction began shortly after the laying of the cornerstone in 2016, with funds secured by the Waqf Directorate of the Islamic Community in Bosnia and Herzegovina through the General Directorate of Waqfs of the Republic of Turkey. The construction and restoration works on the mosque in Čajniče are being carried out by the Turkish company Sama Bursa.

By a decision of the Commission for the Preservation of National Monuments of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Sinan-beg Boljanić Mosque was declared a national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina in 2004.
