Snowstorm hits US and Canada

Due to the snowstorm, which is moving slowly across the American Midwest, about 2,000 flights have been cancelled, and two people have died in traffic accidents caused by snow on the roads, reports the news agency Patria. 

The blizzard started in Chicago, where about 30 centimeters of snow is expected by nightfall, and moved towards Pennsylvania and western New York state.

The snowstorm is likely to cover the area from Nebraska to Maine, according to the National Weather Service.

Due to the bad weather, 1,950 flights have been cancelled so far, mainly at two airports in Chicago.

In Nebraska, some sections of Interstate 80 were closed on Sunday due to ice-related accidents, in which a truck driver and a 62-year-old woman died.

The snowstorm also caused power outages in the suburbs of Chicago and northern Indiana.

 Winds in Canada reach speeds of 150 kilometers per hour

Environment Canada reported that the speed of the snowstorm in some parts of Newfoundland exceeded 150 kilometers per hour.

The institution urged the public to be cautious and not to travel unless absolutely necessary.

The areas of Toronto, Mississauga, Hamilton, and Niagara Falls have been affected by the storm, and icy roads are further hindering traffic.

The storm has caused traffic disruptions and the cancellation of numerous land and air transport services.

All police, civil protection, and other services teams are engaged on the ground, and numerous schools and public institutions are closed until further notice.

Traffic on snow and ice-covered streets is significantly hampered, and the legal ban on the use of chains is an additional cause of frequent accidents.

Meteorologists predict that the storm could remain active for the next two days.
