Listen, let the Singer tell you something: Why Davorin Popović was so loved and why he remains loved

One of the most famous singers in the former Yugoslavia, and a member of the legendary Sarajevo rock group Indexi, Davorin Popović was born on this day, September 23, 1946.  Affectionately called Dačo, he earned the nickname Pimpek in childhood due to a small growth near his left ear.

In his youth, he played handball and basketball, and in basketball he was one of the most talented guards of his time in Sarajevo. He was captain of KK Mlada Bosna (later KK Željezničar), and as a regular first-team player, he played over 500 matches. He actively stopped playing sports in 1968. He was a student at the Faculty of Political Sciences in Sarajevo.

He began his music career in the group Lutalice, and joined Indexi at the end of 1964, remaining its hallmark until the end. With Indexi, he left an indelible mark on the music history of Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and the former Yugoslavia. As a soloist, again with the support of Indexi, he released three albums. In 1975, he released the album "Svaka je ljubav ista (osim one prave)", in 1984 "S tobom dijelim sve", while an album of the same name but with different songs was released in 1995.

In the 1980s, he often performed with Mostarske kiše, a vocal group led by poet Mišo Marić. He brilliantly performed the song "Žute dunje" for the soundtrack of the film "Kuduz", and once performed at Eurovision, in 1995, when he represented Bosnia and Herzegovina with the song "21. vijek" and placed 19th. Before that, Davorin competed for Eurovision in 1967 with Indexi, and as a soloist in 1993 at the first independent BH selection for the Eurovision Song Contest.

Davorin Popović, together with Indexi, received the April 6th Award of the City of Sarajevo, which is awarded to the most prominent creators in all fields, as well as the Yugoslav entertainment award.

He called himself - the Singer, and began his stories with the words: "Listen, let the singer tell you something...". Sarajevo accepted this, and anyone who knows how the City on the Miljacka breathes is aware of what recognition the Old Town thus bestowed upon Davorin.

„Listen, let the Singer tell you something ...“, Davorin would begin his stories. Even in wartime - when the wise were silent, fools spoke, and scoundrels grew rich - in the city, everyone knew who the Singer was and what respect he deserved. We hope that from this text you will sense why, after the Singer's words, the company would fall silent, that is, why his word in Sarajevo carried weight like few others'.

He died on June 18, 2001, in Sarajevo from pancreatic cancer. He was buried on June 20, 2001, at the Sarajevo cemetery Bare in the Alley of Greats.
