Bosna River Basin Most Polluted

Water is one of BiH's greatest natural resources. Therefore, protection and rational use are imperative for every person. For the area of water protection in accordance with the Water Management Strategy and program activities from the operational start until the end of 2012, the FBiH Environmental Protection Fund allocated about 40 million KM, of which 11 million KM was secured for water protection projects of significance for FBiH, writes the Patria News Agency.

The Fund's involvement in the currently largest water protection infrastructure projects in FBiH, together with partners such as the World Bank, the European Investment Bank, KfW Bank, as well as the FBiH Government and local communities, aims to fulfill the task given by the Water Law and the Water Protection Strategy.

The main goals related to water protection are:

- achieving good ecological status of surface waters and good physico-chemical status of groundwater,

- implementing the principles of sustainable use of water resources,

- protection of water sources used or planned to be used for water supply,

- protection of aquatic flora and fauna.

According to data from the FBiH Environmental Protection Fund, an example of the state of water pollution is the Bosna River basin, which is inhabited by about 40% of BiH's population and is the most burdened basin with industrial waters. Wastewater treatment is not resolved in BiH, and there are also problems with water supply for the population and industry, which is why water protection is a priority in our country, say the Environmental Protection Fund.
