A person can never forget that, it stays forever. When this date comes, because of what I saw, so many wounded, so much blood, it was difficult then and it is now, said Avdulah Mustajbašić, one of the 108 citizens of Sarajevo who were lightly and seriously wounded in the massacre on May 27, 1992. He was seriously wounded and lost his leg due to complications.
- When the smoke cleared, I saw a bloody circle around me. I remember a woman who was wounded in the neck and was holding her wound with her hand to avoid bleeding out. That image haunts me the most – Mustajbašić told the BH news agency Patria.
Twenty-six fellow citizens were killed while waiting in line for bread. Husein Kurahović, a war invalid, comes to this place every year to pay tribute to all those who perished in the massacre. He was in the immediate vicinity of this place when he heard the detonation, writes NAP.
- I came by car to the Eternal Flame because I couldn't get any closer. I picked up a wounded person and took him to the hospital. Then I returned and on the way I met a TV crew and told them to follow me. Those images are still before my eyes, I still see where everyone was lying – said Kurahović.
Mustajbašić and Kurahović paid tribute to the murdered citizens
The president of the Union of Civilian Victims of War of Sarajevo Canton, Senida Karović, said in her address to the attendees that the citizens did not suspect at the time that this was the beginning of the siege of Sarajevo, which would permanently mark the lives of Sarajevans.
- The crime that was committed should not be forgotten. The images of the suffering of our fellow citizens at this place must not disappear. The crime committed in this street of defiance against innocent civilians is unprecedented in history. This crime scene should be commemorated and never forgotten, just like any other place where innocent citizens perished. It is the obligation of all of us that the evil done to this city never happens again to anyone – said Karović.
Delegations from the City of Sarajevo, Sarajevo Canton, the Municipalities of Stari Grad and Centar, as well as associations of civilian war victims of Sarajevo Canton and families of the killed and wounded citizens of Sarajevo laid flowers at the memorial, writes Patria.
