Assembly Adopts Decision: Citizens Will No Longer Pay Co-payments for Healthcare Services in KS

(Patria) - The KS Assembly today adopted the Decision on the abolition of co-payments, i.e., it voted to repeal the Decision on repealing the Decision on personal participation of insured persons in the costs of using healthcare and bearing the costs of treatment in the Canton Sarajevo, which had been in force since 2000, with amendments made in 2003 and 2004.

After 12 years, at the proposal of the Ministry of Health and the KS Government, the Assembly adopted the abolition of co-payments for all services at all levels of healthcare, primary, secondary, and tertiary.

“By abolishing co-payments, we will relieve our citizens of additional costs, additional harassment, waiting in lines, at counters and cash desks. Even those who were exempt from payment on some prescribed basis had to wait in some line for someone to confirm they did not need to pay these costs. We have now left that behind us, I believe to the satisfaction of all health insurance beneficiaries in Canton Sarajevo,” said Enis Hasanović on this occasion.

Payment of co-payments has been abolished for all health services, from magnetic resonance imaging, CT scans, radiological services, ultrasound, as well as payments for accompanying mothers of children over one year of age, home visits, and all other services that were covered by the previous decision.

It is estimated that approximately 800,000 KM was collected and paid to the Health Insurance Fund in this way. The abolition of co-payment payments is a joint initiative of the KS Health Insurance Fund, the KS Government, and the Ministry of Health, and as stated, it will not disrupt the financial plan and operations of this fund.
