Assembly of Canadian city of Hamilton pays tribute to victims of the Srebrenica genocide

(Patria) - The Canadian city of Hamilton has been paying tribute to the victims of the Srebrenica genocide for nearly a decade by declaring July 11 as the Day of Remembrance for the Srebrenica Genocide. This year, for the first time, the city council session paid tribute to the victims of the genocide.

Hamilton Mayor Andrea Horwath and members of the Hamilton City Council, in addition to the proclamation declaring July 11 as the Day of Remembrance for the victims of the Srebrenica genocide, paid tribute to the victims during the city council session itself.

All members of the city council received appropriate material from the Institute for Genocide Research Canada, which, among other things, stated:

"The Srebrenica genocide was established and recognized by the International Court of Justice and the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia. These verdicts are the result of investigations and trials and particularly emphasize the scale and intent of the crimes committed. Denial of the verdicts of international courts, denial that also occurs in Hamilton, not only distorts the historical, judicial, and scientific truth, but also causes additional pain to survivors and families of victims who continue to seek justice and reconciliation. The United Nations General Assembly declared July 11 this year as the International Day of Remembrance for the Srebrenica Genocide. This global recognition was also welcomed by Hamilton's leaders."

Director of the Institute for Genocide Research, Emir Ramić, thanked Hamilton for continuously marking the Independence Day of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the White Ribbon Day, the Day of Remembrance for the victims of the Srebrenica genocide, and the Statehood Day of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

"The Bosnian-Herzegovinian community in Hamilton greatly appreciates Hamilton's engagement in the process of preserving and strengthening the culture of remembrance of the Srebrenica genocide. This represents a highly moral and civilizational act. Through the culture of remembrance, we fight for democracy and human rights. Through remembrance, we fight for a safe future for new generations. Thank you, Hamilton, for preserving the truth about the Srebrenica genocide.
