Remembering the Murdered Children of Sarajevo: Day of Mourning in Sarajevo Canton

(Patria) - Today is a Day of Mourning in Sarajevo Canton.

The Day of Remembrance for the Murdered Children of Sarajevo – May 5 – was permanently declared a Day of Mourning in Sarajevo Canton by last year's Decision of the Government of Sarajevo Canton.

In accordance with the Decision, all public events of an entertainment nature are postponed on this day.

We remind that the Government of Sarajevo Canton, in coordination with the Association of Parents of Murdered Children of Besieged Sarajevo, is organizing the laying of flowers and paying tribute on May 7, 2024, at 1:00 PM at the square near the Memorial to the Murdered Children of Besieged Sarajevo, with an appropriate program.

The decision to declare May 5 as a Day of Mourning in Sarajevo Canton was made at the initiative of the Minister for Veterans' Affairs, Omer Osmanović, who emphasized that this date, as one of the most painful for the residents of this city, must be permanently commemorated as a Day of Mourning.

During the siege of Sarajevo from 1992 to 1995, members of the Army of Republika Srpska killed 1,601 children of this city.
