Remembering Grebak: The Road that Saved Goražde

The organizing committee of the "Grebak 2014" event will organize a commemorative program today at 11:00 AM to remember the most difficult period for Goražde and Bosnia and Herzegovina in recent history. It will also be an opportunity to show younger generations the importance of Grebak and to ensure it is never forgotten and never happens again, writes the BH news agency Patria.

During the war years from 1992 to 1994, the road over Grebak was the only route for delivering medicine and food to the population of besieged Goražde. Soldiers of the Army of RBiH managed to secure the "Road of Life" Goražde – Grebak – Igman – Trnovo – Pazarić with the help of units from Goražde and the 1st Corps.

Grebak still represents a symbol of the difficult period for the population of Goražde and the struggle for survival and equality. According to estimates, over 30,000 people passed through Grebak, finding refuge in the free territories of RBiH, as well as in other European countries.

On the road over Grebak, many civilians were killed in ambushes or lost their lives from starvation, exhaustion, and cold.

This morning, dozens of citizens set off for the destination, and transportation to Goražde was organized from several locations in Sarajevo.
