(Patria) - At this year's International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO), held in Great Britain (Bath), students from Bosnia and Herzegovina achieved phenomenal results, winning three gold medals.
This is the 32nd time BiH has participated in the IMO, the most prestigious mathematical competition in the world, and in the previous 31 participations, no student had managed to win a gold medal.
Finally, that wait has come to an end, and our students, beyond all expectations, won as many as three gold medals this year. Our golden boys are: Benjamin Mujkić, a 3rd-year student at the Second Gymnasium Sarajevo, Andrej Krčmar, a 2nd-year student at the Gymnasium Banja Luka, and Vuk Janković, a 1st-year student at the Gymnasium "Jovan Dučić" Trebinje.
In this way, they have written the history of BiH mathematics in golden letters, and although they have won many awards before, this is the crown of their work and effort.
Other students from BiH were also phenomenal: Harun Alibegović, a graduate of Richmond Park International Secondary School Sarajevo, won a silver medal, while bronze medals were won by students from the Second Gymnasium Sarajevo - Adnan Osmić and Naida Gavranović.
The leader at this year's, historically significant for BiH, Olympiad was Adisa Bolić, while the deputy was Bojan Pažin. This is also the first time that all students from BiH have won medals at the IMO. In the team standings, Bosnia and Herzegovina took 13th place out of 108 countries, which is by far the best team placement in history. The previous best placement was 29th place.
The Association of Mathematicians of Sarajevo Canton congratulated the students and leaders, and emphasized that all these students have been attending the School of Mathematics for Gifted Students organized by them for years, and that they were aware that they had a fantastic team considering that all team members had already won medals at international competitions, but they could not even dream of such a result.
The Ministry of Education and Upbringing of Sarajevo Canton has been systematically supporting students' participation in international competitions for three years, and provides scholarships and awards for gifted students, and will continue to do so.
They invited everyone who wishes to honor the arrival of the BiH Olympic team and thus reward them for this historic achievement, to come to Sarajevo Airport on Wednesday, July 24, at 7:50 PM.
