Selma Alispahić: We still live in fascism today, create conditions for young people to stay in BiH

SARAJevo, (Patria) - Today we still have the awareness that even after 20 years we need to talk about the fight against fascism because we live in fascism. Let's not tie fascism to something that happened 70 years ago, we live in a situation of latent fascism, and if you analyze everything that is happening to us today, we live in fascism, said award-winning actress Selma Alispahić and university professor. 

She emphasized that she is pleased that a large number of young people come to watch the play "Ay Carmela" multiple times, which indicates that they need a voice of courage.

“This is a story about the power of individual gesture. We have lost faith in the idea that we can achieve something individually. We have become apathetic, lethargic, we think that nothing can be done. What happens in the play "Ay Carmela" is precisely the strength of the individual gesture of one person, and a woman in this story. Young people must understand that things are not lost, everyone can change society with their individual gesture,” Alispahić told N1.

Alispahić said that the younger generations are persistently returning to the play Ay Carmela. She said she recommends young people to leave BiH at least for a while.

“I don't think they should leave forever, but they should understand that they have one life and that they can do whatever they want with it. If we want young people to stay here, we must love them, create a system in which they will feel safe, and in which true values will be highlighted, and that is not the case today. Let's create a country for these young people where they are capable, not suitable, so they don't have to be party members to be recognized. Go, people, do whatever you want with your lives, no one should judge anyone, or give patriotic and moral lectures. First, we must create an environment that is safe, orderly, systematically organized, and that these young people will not want to leave this country.”

One of the most successful and longest-running plays in Bosnia and Herzegovina, "Ay, Carmela," will be performed again for the audience on February 8 at the Sarajevo War Theatre SARTR. This play is a chronicle of memories of the Spanish Civil War and a tribute to artistic honor and dignity, humanism, and the moral qualities of collective anti-fascist consciousness.
