EU Foreign Affairs Chief: People must know the truth – the border is not open!

(Patria) – Migrants who want to go to Europe should know that the border between Turkey and Greece is closed, said EU Foreign Affairs Chief Josep Borrell.

He called on the countries involved in the dispute to 'stop the game'.

Thousands of refugees and migrants have been trying to enter the EU via Greece in recent days after Turkey, which has hosted nearly 4 million refugees for years, declared the border with the EU open.

The EU has approved a support package worth 700 million euros for Greece to help it cope with migrants.

In a statement to the media, Borrell emphasized that people trying to cross the border – believing the border is open – must be stopped first.

'It is a matter of communication, people must know the truth. Let's stop this game,' Borrell said.

He also addressed the difficulties the EU is facing in delivering humanitarian aid to the population of Syria, which is literally caught between two fires – Syrian forces and their Russian allies, and opposition forces supported by Turkey.

Although the presidents of Russia and Turkey agreed on a ceasefire, the question remains how long the truce will last and whether safe passage of humanitarian aid for millions of homeless civilians will be allowed. Borrell stressed that the parties to the conflict should help humanitarian organizations delivering aid in extremely difficult conditions.

Euronews writes that EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen told the Greek Prime Minister during a visit to the border that 'this is not just a Greek border, but also the border of the European Union'.
