SDP calls on the KS Government to react urgently due to the worsening security situation

The Cantonal Board of SDP BiH Sarajevo calls on the Government of Sarajevo Canton and the Assembly of Sarajevo Canton to react urgently due to the worsening security situation in Sarajevo Canton, reports the Patria News Agency.

In addition to the economic insecurity caused by the social insensitivity of the ruling structures in Sarajevo Canton through constant increases in utility prices and the cost of living in the Canton, in recent weeks we have witnessed an enormous increase in criminal acts of armed robbery, arson, destruction of property, car theft, and daily gunfire on the streets of Sarajevo.

Citizens feel insecure, and criminals feel protected. In a society where punishment for committed offenses is not certain and where it is impossible to detain even those accused of multi-million dollar embezzlements, a clear message is sent to criminals that they will go unpunished and can do whatever they want. It is also well known in Sarajevo Canton that certain lawyers enjoy the favor of people from the criminal milieu, and that their influence extends all the way to the prosecutor's offices and courts. There is an absolute lack of responsibility from the ruling structures and a disregard for security in Sarajevo Canton.

Today, parents do not dare to let their children go to school alone, pensioners do not dare to walk with shopping bags and purses, and "tough guys" in cars worth hundreds of thousands of marks and with no work experience rule the city. What messages are being sent to the citizens of Sarajevo Canton? Do they really think that by presenting statistical data that Sarajevo is safer than most European metropolises, they will convince citizens to trust statistics more than their own eyes?

Try to convince the family of our fellow citizen who died today as a passerby, caught in the crossfire of unscrupulous criminals. We appeal to all institutions in Sarajevo Canton to react urgently and prevent the rampage of criminal groups against the citizens of Sarajevo Canton. They were elected and paid by these same citizens for that! Today, a citizen riding a bicycle died in Ilidža. Tomorrow, it could be any one of us.  

At the same time, regarding the attempted bank robbery in Ilidža and the murder of a citizen who was passing by, Vibor Handžić, president of the Cantonal Board of Naša stranka, made a statement.

- I express my condolences to the family of the murdered man and share the concern of the citizens of Sarajevo regarding the unfortunate event this morning in Ilidža. In addition to this robbery in Ilidža, there was an armed robbery in Hrasno. It is difficult to speak when a completely innocent person dies in such a way, but it is even more difficult to say nothing about the situation where citizens no longer feel safe on the streets - said Handžić.
