SDA: Varhelyi Aligns Himself with Genocide Deniers

(Patria) - The statement by European Commissioner for Neighbourhood and Enlargement Oliver Varhelyi, opposing the adoption of the Srebrenica Resolution in the UN General Assembly, claiming it attempts to impose collective guilt on the Serbian people, is not only contrary to the values on which the European Union is founded but is also based on complete falsehoods, according to a reaction from the Party of Democratic Action.

"The Srebrenica Resolution does not stigmatize or, in any context, impose collective responsibility on the Serbian people. It does not even mention the ethnic, institutional, or any other affiliation of those who committed genocide; it is exclusively dedicated to preserving the memory of the victims and condemning the denial of judicially established facts.

With such claims, Varhelyi aligns himself with those who deny genocide and who, by completely misinterpreting the content and essence of the Resolution, are actually imposing collective responsibility on the Serbian people. Instead of spreading Greater Serbian propaganda, Varhelyi, as a European Commissioner, should focus on combating the practice of genocide denial, which is detrimental to the process of genuine reconciliation and lasting stabilization of the region, and thus to the European perspective of the Western Balkan countries.

Varhelyi's stance is also contrary to three European Parliament resolutions, which highlight the fact that genocide was committed in Srebrenica, precisely naming those responsible for this crime. Therefore, the European Commission has a special obligation to publicly distance itself and condemn Varhelyi's opposition to the adoption of the Resolution," states the SDA.

They emphasize that the lack of concrete reaction from state-level authorities is concerning, especially from the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Bosnia and Herzegovina, who, instead of intensive lobbying for the adoption of the Resolution and preventing the spread of inaccurate interpretations of its content, is misusing his position and almost entirely using it to defend himself from problems he has with international and domestic police agencies.
