Schmidt's futile statement: Authorities must take swift and decisive measures to provide security for all citizens

(Patria) - Every person has the fundamental right to live freely and without fear of discrimination or physical harassment in every part of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the High Representative Christian Schmidt stated today.

Schmidt emphasizes that the disturbing incidents aimed at intimidating returnees, recorded in various parts of BiH over the past few days, are in complete opposition to the progress achieved in the past three decades of post-war recovery in BiH.

"These concerning incidents are fueled by increasingly pronounced nationalist discourse, including around the unconstitutional marking of January 9.

Such actions not only endanger the safety and well-being of returnees but also pose a serious threat to investments, EU integration, and the overall prosperity of the entire country.

The RS should have its day, but that day cannot be marked in a way that discriminates against some citizens or otherwise causes divisions.

The political leaders of this country must always bear in mind that their words carry weight. Words can easily turn into actions that affect the lives of individuals.

Therefore, they should refrain from using rhetoric that calls for divisions and from moves that could cause tensions, and instead prioritize the well-being of all citizens.

The OHR reiterates that the Republika Srpska, as a signatory to Annex 7 of the General Framework Agreement for Peace, has committed to ensuring on its territory the political, economic, and social conditions that enable the harmonious reintegration of returnees without the risk of harassment, intimidation, persecution, or discrimination, especially on the basis of ethnic origin, religious affiliation, or political beliefs.

The RS authorities must take all necessary steps to combat any form of violence, discrimination, or intimidation against any community living in the area under their jurisdiction.

The OHR calls on all competent authorities to take swift and decisive measures to provide security and protection for all citizens.

Some leaders in this country have shown restraint and kept their focus on the key reforms needed for BiH to officially begin EU membership negotiations this spring. That is the correct approach.

It is of utmost importance that everyone in BiH demonstrates commitment to democracy, human rights, and a shared future prosperity in BiH," Schmidt stated in his futile statement.
