Schmidt presented report at UN Security Council: BiH is in a political, not security crisis - no danger of war

(Patria) - A session of the UN Security Council is underway in New York, where High Representative Christian Schmidt presented his report on the situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Schmidt stated, among other things, that Bosnia and Herzegovina is in a political crisis, but not a security crisis.

He assessed the situation regarding respect for the Dayton Peace Agreement in BiH as the worst ever, and everything, as he stated, began after the first-instance verdict against the President of Republika Srpska, Milorad Dodik.

The authorities in Republika Srpska, he adds, used this verdict as an excuse for moves towards "de facto secession", which he included the initiative to form a new constitution of Republika Srpska in.

- This is the culmination of policies that have been implemented for a long time, which I warned about in my previous reports - says Schmidt.

He adds that the economic situation is slightly improving, but that the country is in a serious demographic crisis.

- Bosnia and Herzegovina is in the biggest crisis since Dayton, but there is no danger of war - Schmidt asserted.

He warned about the inflammatory rhetoric and insults used by certain actors, questioning the survival of Bosnia and Herzegovina in accordance with the Dayton Peace Agreement.

- The Dayton Peace Agreement remains the foundation on which the future of Bosnia and Herzegovina can be built - Schmidt emphasized in his address.

However, he stressed that this does not mean that the need for amendments and changes to the BiH Constitution, which is an integral part of the Dayton Peace Agreement, cannot be discussed.

He also stated that 30 years ago, when the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina ended, no one expected that the international community would be needed this much today.

Concluding his address, he urged BiH leaders to continue on the path towards European integration.

He called on the international community to continue supporting the country and its people and to take steps so that they are not forgotten.
