Scanlan in Brčko: Reform processes to yield results in spring

(Patria) - In his first visit to Brčko in 2022, First Deputy High Representative and Supervisor Michael Scanlan emphasized that we are entering a period in which the Brčko District administration has the opportunity to show that the District is not only an example of peaceful coexistence but also of common prosperity.

In the spring, a decision will be made on the highway routes, the agreement on the reconstruction of the Gunja-Brčko bridge will be adopted, and the final agreement for the modernization of the port will be concluded. This will be complemented by the commencement of works on the Brod Industrial Zone, the main transport pipeline for Brčko, flood regulation for the Brka river, and other projects.

Spring will also bring additional steps in the fight against corruption, political patronage, and nepotism. The Conflict of Interest Commission will collect asset declarations of public officials, the Anti-Corruption Office will review employment practices, and a new Law on Civil Service will be submitted to the Assembly to ensure the system is based on merit.

The non-governmental sector, within the framework of a new transparent public financing system, will serve as a watchdog and partner to the government to ensure that this new trend of good governance in the District is sustainable. Young people should see their participation in civil society as a way to help build the community in which they themselves want to live.

The Supervisor praised the work of the District Police in the past few months as an example of professionalism and commitment to serving the community, which all officials in the District should emulate.

These topics were discussed during the Supervisor's meetings with the District Government and the leadership of the Assembly, the Head of the Department for Spatial Planning and Property-Legal Affairs, the Director of NGO DEMOS and the coordinator of the project "STOP Undeclared Employment", and the Director of NGO Vermont and the Police Chief.
