MUP KS Tips: How to Prevent Your Car from Being Stolen

Although car thieves in Sarajevo target luxury car models, it is not uncommon for older vehicles to be stolen or broken into, writes the BH News Agency Patria.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs of KS advises citizens on how they can prevent vehicle theft.

- Observe the movement of suspicious unknown persons near your apartment (house) and parking lot, and if something seems suspicious, notify the police – they say from MUP KS.

Also, as they state, when you leave the vehicle, even for a short time, turn off the engine, remove the key from the ignition, lock the vehicle, and do not leave documents inside.

- Install an additional steering wheel lock or a lever for its blockade. Install an alarm system and an electronic engine immobilizer (hidden circuit breaker). Install levers to block the gearbox, pedals, brakes, and clutch. Close the sunroof and windows. Do not leave the vehicle in a dark and deserted place for a long time unattended. In case of a missing lock and observed damage to the lock, notify the police, and after that, change the lock and move the vehicle to a safer place. When monitoring your vehicle, also look at your neighbor's.

The police also offer advice to citizens who find their own stolen vehicle.

- If your vehicle has been stolen and you have found it, do not open the vehicle doors. Do not get into the vehicle and do not touch it. Immediately call the police, who will conduct an investigation. This will make it easier for the police to identify and find the vehicle thief.

BUYING USED VEHICLES

Do not buy used vehicles without inspecting the validity of the vehicle and ownership documents (registration certificate and vehicle book). Check for existing damage to the vehicle's bodywork that may indicate the vehicle has been stolen. Do not buy a vehicle that does not have the original key. A used vehicle should only be purchased when you are sure it has not been stolen. Do not buy a vehicle from a person who is not the owner of the vehicle. Do not buy a vehicle from suspicious and unauthorized workshops.
