Sava could return to its banks only next week

According to official data from the BiH Ministry of Security, the Sava water level in Posavina is decreasing, but the water level is dropping very slowly, writes the BiH news agency Patria (NAP). Although the rainfall stopped a few days ago, the water is still present in the towns along the Sava: Šamac, Orašje, Brčko, and Bijeljina.

According to reports from European Union observers on a mission in BiH and reports from civil protection operational centers for the period from May 24 to 26, the situation in this area regarding floods has not changed.

- The water level is stagnating, the water is slowly receding into its banks. Along the flooded area, in some places, the water is receding less than 1 centimeter per hour. At this rate, if there is no significant rainfall, it will be realistic to expect the water to return to its banks in eight to ten days – the report of the BiH Ministry of Security states.

According to the same reports, more than 70 percent of the territory in each of the mentioned municipalities is under water.

- In Odžak, the water level is around 4 meters in some places. Approximately 150 million cubic meters of water are in the flooded areas of Bijeljina and surrounding places. About 18,600 households are completely flooded, as well as public service facilities: schools, hospitals, police stations... Several hundred tons of animal carcasses are still in the flooded areas; in the Posavina Canton alone, there are about 600 tons. There is a risk of infection, the report states, among other things, Patria reports.
