Sarajevo's Tunnel of Hope and Salvation for the Besieged City

Sarajevo's Tunnel of Salvation, dug under the runway of Sarajevo International Airport during the fiercest and longest siege of the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina in 1993, is one of the greatest phenomena during the war in BiH, and Sarajevo's most closely guarded secret during that period.

Measuring 720 meters long and 1.5 meters high, it represented the only route through which food, medicine, and other necessities arrived in besieged Sarajevo. It connected two parts of the territory under the control of the Army of RBiH, Dobrinja and Butmir. Hence, it was named "Tunnel D-B" or Tunnel of Salvation.

The tunnel was dug at the end of July 1993 at 8:50 PM.

Before the construction of this tunnel, more than 800 Sarajevans lost their lives on the runway and airport complex while running to Butmir and Hrasnica for food and medicine. Serbian forces located in the immediate vicinity of the airport fired upon any person attempting to cross to the other side of the airport.

Today, 24 years later, numerous tourists visit the Tunnel of Salvation to see the lifeline of besieged Sarajevo, writes Patria agency.

The number of visits is growing day by day, and the goal is for it to become an indispensable part of the tourist offer of Sarajevo Canton.
