Sarajevo street named after Bishop Strossmayer officially declared a national monument

SARAJEVO, (Patria) - The Commission for the Preservation of National Monuments has adopted decisions declaring four properties as national monuments of Bosnia and Herzegovina: the Archaeological site – stećci near the Ričina stream, Posušje municipality; the Architectural ensemble – Štrosmajerova Street in Sarajevo; the Architectural ensemble – the Old Mosque with its courtyard in Goduši near Visoko; and the Historical monument – the Central Memorial Ossuary for fallen participants of the National Liberation War, Lukavac municipality. 

Štrosmajerova Street in Sarajevo is one of the most famous streets in the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina. It was named after Josip Juraj Štrosmajer (Strossmayer), a Croatian bishop, theologian, and politician, who was one of the most significant and influential Croatian figures of the 19th century.

The street was built by the Austro-Hungarian administration, which envisioned this part of Sarajevo as its urban “heart.” They named it Rudolfova at the time, in honor of Crown Prince Rudolf Franz Karl Joseph, son of Emperor Franz Joseph I.

Since 1919, the street has borne the name Štrosmajerova, after Josip Juraj Štrosmajer.
