Sarajevo police have new interceptors: They detect all types of violations, as well as stolen cars

(Patria) - The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Sarajevo Canton – Police Administration has been using two new vehicles for recording traffic violations on the streets of Sarajevo Canton since the beginning of this month, so-called interceptor vehicles.

These vehicles are equipped with as many as nine cameras, simultaneously record up to seven traffic lanes (in both directions), record in a 360-degree range, and simultaneously detect more than 100 vehicles.

As confirmed by the Minister of Internal Affairs of KS, Admir Katica, this is modern technology that will help improve the situation in traffic safety on Sarajevo roads, as well as in more effective sanctioning of offenders.

"We are constantly improving our methods of combating traffic delinquency, listening to what citizens tell us, and finding ways to stop reckless driving on the roads. Traffic incivility is ubiquitous, and the fact that the police issued more than 380,000 violation notices to drivers in 2024 speaks volumes. The new interceptors are another step in dealing with traffic offenders and protecting our citizens in traffic," the minister explained.

"Everything we do in traffic safety: radars, body cameras, cameras at bus stops, temporary vehicle confiscation, drug tests, interceptor vehicles, we do to protect our citizens and save human lives," he added.

On this occasion, the minister also noted that the MUP KS is still awaiting amendments to the Law on the Fundamentals of Road Traffic Safety in BiH, as well as the Law on Misdemeanors of FBiH, which are necessary for the police to be more effective in combating traffic delinquency.

According to the Police Commissioner, General Inspector Fatmir Hajdarević, the new interceptors are an addition to the existing ones that have been on the streets of Sarajevo for several years, but with significantly better and improved technical performance.

"The Police Administration of the MUP of Sarajevo Canton has been using interceptor vehicles for recording traffic violations since 2019, when we started using two devices installed on T-Roc vehicles. This year, we have improved and strengthened controls by acquiring two new vehicles that have significantly improved technical capabilities for recording and storing all materials they capture, which serve as evidence of traffic violations. In this way, we have the ability to act faster and more efficiently, as well as to increase the safety of all traffic participants," stated Police Commissioner, General Inspector Hajdarević.

The new interceptors are equipped with a device for measuring speed and detecting license plates. Given that the devices record in a 360-degree range during operation, the entire space around the vehicle is covered, and there are no blind spots. For drivers, this means that an interceptor can record them committing a violation no matter where they are in relation to it, in front, behind, beside...

The interceptor can record violations such as: inappropriate speed, crossing a solid line, improper lane change, overtaking, running a red light, and using a mobile phone while driving. The device automatically stores a photo of the vehicle that committed the violation, and all the data is displayed on the photo: license plate, date and time of the violation, location.

The interceptor can also operate while stationary, meaning it does not need to be in motion to record traffic violations; it can also be in a stationary state.

This interceptor also has the capability to carry a database of stolen or missing vehicles. In that case, it can detect when a stolen vehicle is nearby – if it is within the camera's range, allowing the police to react promptly. With this in mind, these devices are an important tool for the work of both the Traffic Unit and the criminal police.
