Sarajevo: Civil Protection Headquarters on alert due to landslides in Old Town

(Patria) - The Civil Protection Headquarters of the Old Town Municipality continues to organize 24-hour terrain observation at the Curine njive and Bistrički potok locations in order to provide early warning to the endangered population and their possible evacuation.

Representatives of the Municipality of East Old Town and the Municipality of Old Town (Bostarići), as stated, upon visiting the "Curine njive" site on several occasions yesterday, observed that deep cracks are still present in the terrain and that water is seeping from above the location.

It was also determined that above a part of the playground plot at the Curine njive location, which represents the lower point of the embankment/landfill from the Trebević Hills construction site, on the left side, water is constantly flowing, and it is not rainwater or precipitation from the Trebević slopes. No new quantities of soil and stone material are being deposited at this location.

It was observed that the bed of the Bistrički potok stream is still partially filled with material from the landfill, collapsed trees, and previously cut trees. No new collapses of material from the landfill in the form of soil, stone, and trees were observed, nor was any removal of previously deposited soil, stone, and trees observed.

Acting on the order of the Civil Protection Headquarters of Sarajevo Canton, the evacuation of the population from the endangered area of the Old Town Municipality has been ordered since November 1st.

The Commander of the Municipal Civil Protection Headquarters, Irfan Čengić, visited the site again yesterday and spoke with citizens. He informed them about the content of the order, the activities that need to be undertaken, and the plan for evacuation and accommodation of the population in case of an assessment that natural or other disasters may occur or that a state of natural or other disaster has been declared in the area of the Old Town Municipality Sarajevo, MZ "Širokača" location, Bostarići and Ablakovina streets.

Based on the order of the Civil Protection Headquarters of Sarajevo Canton, since November 1st, the Municipal Civil Protection Headquarters of Novo Sarajevo Municipality, with its services on standby, is ready to act promptly in case of evacuation and reception of the population and material goods.


The alert will continue throughout today, it was announced by the Federal Civil Protection Administration.
