On October 7, 1966, Sarajevo hosted the 25th Balkan Athletics Games. It was the largest sporting event in BiH up to that date, which at the renovated Koševo, under floodlights, attracted around 60,000 spectators, writes the Patria news agency.
This sports spectacle introduced the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina to the world of sports in a grand manner. Sarajevo would also host the 40th Balkan Athletics Games on September 18, 1981, and three years later, it hosted the 14th Winter Olympic Games. Almost five decades later, athlete Amel Tuka brought Bosnia and Herzegovina its first gold, and soon after, a bronze medal from the World Championships in Beijing in 2015, writes Patria.
