US to seek UN sanctions re-imposition on Iran

(Patria) – US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo stated on Wednesday that the US will seek the UN to re-impose sanctions on Iran, and that it will do everything necessary to ensure that the sanctions are applied.

Pompeo announced this at a joint press conference with British Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab in Washington.

He explained that last month he initiated a one-month process that will allow for the re-imposition of sanctions against Iran by filing a complaint with the Security Council, accusing Tehran of violating the 2015 nuclear deal. Pompeo claims that as a result, sanctions should be re-imposed as early as Sunday.

However, 13 out of 15 council members consider Pompeo's initiative legally invalid because the US withdrew from the so-called nuclear deal two years ago, while diplomats believe that only a small number of member states would support the imposition of UN sanctions, Reuters reports.
