Russian doctors examine Mladić in The Hague

A team of doctors from Russia arrived in The Hague to examine Ratko Mladić and study his medical documentation, after which they are expected to propose the method and course of his further treatment, Mladić's lawyer Miloš Šaljić told Tanjug today, reports the Patria News Agency.

The team of Russian doctors consists of a cardiologist, a neurologist, and a nephrologist, Šaljić specified, adding that they are expected to propose continuing treatment in Russia.

The doctors, as he stated, are also expected to consult with colleagues from the Netherlands who are overseeing Mladić's treatment, and then give their opinion and proposals.

Mladić's defense has been seeking permission from the Tribunal for nearly two years to allow doctors from Moscow from the "Bakunin" institute to examine him in The Hague, where he is held in the Tribunal's detention unit.

Mladić's health condition is very serious, as he has suffered several strokes and had a heart attack.

Media reported that the Russian Committee for Support of Mladić initiated the idea of transferring him to Moscow for treatment for a period necessary for his recovery, and that Russia has provided guarantees for this.

Mladić was arrested in Serbia in 2011 after 12 years on the run, after which he was extradited to the Hague Tribunal, where his trial for war crimes charges is ongoing.
