Rompuy and Barroso: The bloodshed in Gaza must stop!

Regarding the latest developments in the Gaza Strip, Herman Van Rompuy, President of the European Council, and Jose Manuel Barroso, President of the European Commission, issued a joint statement on behalf of the European Union today, reports the Bosnian news agency Patria.

- Gaza has been suffering unbearable violence for more than three weeks. We condemn the terrible loss of life, especially of women and children. Many have been injured, and property and livelihoods have been destroyed. This must stop immediately. We also condemn the continued rocket fire over Israel. There are limits to what military operations can achieve. Only negotiations between the two states can bring a solution and lasting peace. The bloodshed must be stopped - the statement said, as reported by Patria.

- Today we will join the voice of the United Nations Secretary-General and other international leaders calling on both sides to end the hostilities. We are ready to support negotiations, to work on building trust. No more lives should be lost. Palestinian and Israeli leaders must show courage and end this senseless violence. Show wisdom to ensure a peaceful and dignified coexistence, but on the basis of mutual respect - the statement said.
